Okay.. I'm slowly catching up on the official releases. I dutifully bought the first 11 Dick's Picks then fell off. But I got a copy of the 5 disc soundtrack this weekend. Seems like a great series of performances, but it may be the best sounding release that I've got. Discuss?

I actually find this Winterland run to be somewhat overrated, especially when compared to all the spectacular summer shows that year. That said, I think this release has some excellent performances. The Dark Star> Morning Dew is a favorite of '74 for sure. The Eyes is legendary but unfortunately edited for some reason on this release (you can find the full version on the So Many Roads boxset).

The sound quality of this release I don't think is the issue, it's the mix. The whole band actually kind of has that "far away" sound, which I hate. I don't care much for the addition of the crowd noise either (although the crowd clapping along on Big Railroad Blues is fun).

Wow CC - Im suprised to hear you are not a fan of this release....What about 10/20 on its own then? Eehhh?? Little Slipknot! jam after Eyes right into a heavenly Stella - Im such a sucker for this one...Probably has to do with the fact i've owned the GD movie soundtrack for much longer than I have known about LMA....Love it!!

It's not that I don't enjoy it, quite the contrary...I just think there are more compelling shows from '74 than this Winterland run. I must admit I have not heard every show in its entirety, so perhaps I should save judgement until I do.

I had the great good fortune to pick this up in a discount store in my home town for (the equivalent) of 8 dollars. It's never far from the CD player and often used to show visitors why I love the Dead so much.

I bought the soundtrack accidentally, thinking it was the movie itself and I am sure glad I did. It is my favorite release except maybe the "ladies and Gentleman the Grateful Dead". The last great Pig release, IMHO.

The sound quality is unsurpassed and the band is rockin, I think the "He's Gone" is the best recording I've heard of it.

Interesting you say that as some felt that this recording was too "different". I believe they had someone else record these shows, not the regular SBD people. Likely to do with creating a movie from them. The audience can be heard a lot easier than a regular SBD. Though I agree, I enjoy the sound quality of these shows. It has a legendary morning dew, of which is on a mix cd i have in my car right now.

Great DVD, Disc two with the China > Rider and the kiddies dancin on stage left doesn't get much better than that.

i love it, and i think its among their best...Ive always said this was the original matrix...They did have the crowd mic'd up and you can definately hear them throughout...You made a fine purchase and like I said - how can you go wrong with this little run? Peace..
